needles and pins

This cover sits squarely between The Searchers’ version from 1964 and Jackie Deshannon’s original 1963 version, with a LOT of 12-string Rickenbacker thrown in for good measure. The Searchers’ more frenetic version was one of the seminal songs from the British Invasion era, at least for me. But I like Jackie’s more deliberate version a little better. The lyric segment below combines elements of both, including some lines that the Searchers left out–which, to me, changes the meaning of the song in fairly significant ways.

Because I saw her today, I saw her face, it was a face I loved
I can’t let go, although I know, she’ll make me cry
Whoa, whoa, whoa
Until the day I die, but people
I got to live now, oh yeah and
I can forgive now.
Yea, when it begins uh
He’ll feel those needles and pins
A-hurtin’ him…
