Just when you are getting things all figured out…

…it’s time to leave.

Tomorrow morning we head to the Madrid airport to begin a two-day journey back to Montana. (We decided to break the trip up in Charlotte for some rest.) Here are some final thoughts.

I want to come back. Or live here.

I said it before and I’ll say it again. The buses and trains in Spain are a delight. The stations are clean and modern (even the ones occupying buildings that predate Columbus), they’re fast, they go where you want when you want, and they are exceptionally comfortable. Unlike air travel, which plops you down miles from the place you are actually going, trains and buses deposit you right in the city.

No one minds if you order a coke and sit for two hours at their outdoor tables.

However, Spaniards are ice-averse. If you want ice in your coke, you have to ask for it.

Spanish culture is such a rich amalgam of influences, a fact that appears to be well-known and appreciated by the people here.

Burger King is the dominant fast-food restaurant here. They’ve staked out a conspicuous presence at many of the most famous and visited sites in Andalusia. This is not something I’m proud of.

There will be a couple more blog posts coming along soon. Our visit to Toledo today conflicted with our need to pack up and get ready to leave. You have been warned…

  1. Fun to see your posts, Skip! My husband and I have been on the Iberian Peninsula for the last couple weeks as well, mostly in Basque country and Galecia. We’re now in Lisboa and nearby areas, next heading to Granada, Madrid, Bilbao…we’re going in a big circle this trip. Looks like you were able to hit a lot of places in Andalusia. Nice posts! I’ve been working in my down time from afar so haven’t done much sharing yet but on my to-do. Cheers!
